- Description: Sewage Treatment Plant
- Location: Curio Bay, The Catlins
- Installed: 2016
- Project type: Design, build, install, commission and maintain
Apex Environmental secured a contract with the Southland District Council, through direct negotiation, to build a new wastewater treatment plant at Curio Bay to cope with the demands of growing numbers of campers and day visitors. A Membrane Bioreactor was identified by all parties as the very best option for this beautiful and environmentally sensitive part of New Zealand. It was important that the treatment plant had minimal visual impact on the area so the two balance tanks were fully buried and all other tanks were partially buried and painted. With the MBR installed the camping area is now well able to deal with future growth in visitor numbers and subsequent increases in sewage volumes. The upgraded treatment plant has also allowed for a wider development of the area to be undertaken including the construction of a Natural Heritage Centre, café and public toilets. The MBR can cope with
fluctuating wastewater volumes and produces clean water that leaves
the plant runs over rocks before discharging to a nearby drainage ditch.
