The wastewater treatment plant was significantly upgraded as part of a resource consent application to expand the capacity of the winery. The upgrade included installation of a rotary screen to remove solids from the wastewater, an aeration system to maintain aerobic conditions in the storage pond, and an automated lime dosing system to maintain a neutral pH prior to irrigation and mitigate the effects of sodium in the discharge.
